France is located in Europe. Some important geographical features in France are The Loire River, The Rhone River, The Seine River, Lake Geneva, The Alps, and The Pyrenees Mountains. The Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea border France. France is a unitary state with a semi- presidential system. It has a constitutional republic. There was a mass exodus of Jews from France during WWII. Germany took over France and the Holocaust [[#|started]]. Some Jewish French [[#|foods]] are algerian couscous and potato lamb roast.
Algerian couscous:
serves 6
1 pound of plain couscous
Meat for cholent
1 sliced onion
1 small tomato
4 tablespoons of canola oil
1 teaspoon of paprika
salt
2 medium sized zucchinis
3 carrots
1 parnish or 2 turnips
16 ounces of washed, cut [[#|butternut squash]]
1 small can of chick peas or 1/2 pound of frozen peas
1/4 pound of frozen [[#|baby]] lima beans
In a big pot, saute the oil with the paprika and add the onion on medium heat for 1 minute. Add the meat, saute until brown on all sides. Add the tomato and smash it with a fork. Cover with water. Cook uncovered on medium heat for 40 to 60 minutes until meat is cooked. While meat is cooking, peel and cut the vegetables in big pieces. [[#|Remove]] the meat, cover at once with aluminum foil and reserve. Add all the vegetables except the zucchinis. Salt and cook the zucchinis in a pot on medium heat for 30 minutes, or until tender. 20 minutes before serving, add the zucchinis and the meat into the pot. Cook on high heat until it starts to boil, then reduce it to low heat until serving. 5 minutes before serving, [[#|open]] the couscous packages and cook according to [[#|directions]] written on the package. Serve the couscous first in individual plates, then add the vegetables and meat on top of it.
Potato lamb roast:
serves 6
1 lamb roast
3 peeled garlic cloves
1 small lightly crushed tomato
1 tablespoon of oil
1 teaspoon of paprika
parsley for garnish
salt and pepper
8 potatoes
oil for frying
Combine oil with paprika in a large pan. Roll lamp roast into pan to cover it with oil and paprika mixture. Add garlic and tomato to the pan, and saute on medium heat until golden brown on all sides. Add 1/2 cup water to the pan, and cook covered for 1 hour on medium heat. While meat is cooking, peel and dice potatoes. Fry potatoes in a deep fryer until golden brown. Add potatoes to pan 5 minutes before serving. [[#|Season]] to taste with salt and pepper. Garnish with parsley.
